Job description

Job description. The Philosophy Department at Rice University in Houston, Texas, invites applications for a tenure track position at the rank of  assistant professor in the history of modern philosophy, broadly construed. We are particularly interested in someone who specializes in early modern philosophy but can also offer courses in Kant and 19th century philosophy, or someone who specializes in Kant but can offer courses in early modern philosophy. In addition, the department will be interested in candidates whose historical work can complement the department’s research strengths in ethics and value theory or philosophy of mind. Assistant professors have a standard teaching load of two courses per semester, at both the graduate and undergraduate levels, perform research in their specialized area, and perform university service through committee work, advising or other duties. The successful candidate must have a PhD in philosophy or have fulfilled the requirements for the PhD in philosophy by one year after employment commences. She or he will have a strong record of research and evidence a commitment to innovative teaching, will be able to take advantage of some of the many opportunities for collaboration both on campus and beyond, and will take an active role in charting the department’s future course.
