St Catherine’s College proposes to appoint a six-hour Stipendiary Lecturer in Philosophy, with effect from 1 October 2012. The Lecturership will be for one year whilst the College fills its current vacancy for a Tutorial Fellow in Philosophy.
The Lecturer will be expected to teach six weighted hours a week averaged over the three terms (twenty-four weeks) of the academic teaching year (the College operates a weighting system whereby hours spent teaching groups larger than one person count for more than one hour). College teaching is in small groups (usually two or three students). He or she will be required to teach one of the following Preliminary Examinations subjects (first-year courses): Mill, and General Philosophy; two of the following Final Honour School papers (second- and third-year courses): History of Philosophy from Descartes to Kant, Knowledge and Reality, and Ethics; plus at least another two Final Honour School papers. In addition, he or she will be expected to act as the Senior Subject Tutor in Philosophy, playing a full role in the running of Philosophy in the College, including arranging tuition, participating in the admissions process, setting and marking College examinations, and taking a role in the pastoral care of undergraduates.
Informal enquiries about the tutorial teaching requirements may be made to the Senior Philosophy Tutor, Dr Tim Bayne (http://www.philosophy.ox.ac.uk/members/philosophy_panel/timothy_bayne).
The annual stipend for three terms is currently £12,260 and is pensionable. The Lecturer will be a member of the Senior Common Room and will be entitled, free of charge, to three lunches and two dinners during term-time and during the admissions exercise in December, and one lunch and one dinner per week outside term-time. A teaching room will be available in College.
If the successful candidate is willing and able to teach the new Final Honour School Philosophy of Cognitive Science paper, he or she would be appointed to an eight-hour Stipendiary Lecturership for which the annual stipend for three terms is currently £16,347. In addition to delivering tutorials for the paper, he or she may be invited to deliver a series of eight University lectures for the paper, for which the remuneration is currently £960. A description of the Philosophy of Cognitive Science paper, and of other Final Honour School papers in Philosophy, can be found on the Philosophy Faculty’s website at http://www.philosophy.ox.ac.uk/undergraduate/course_descriptions.
