Job description

This renewable three-year, senior post is intended to enlarge the capacity for leading funded research projects within the Centre for the Study of Global Ethics (http://www.birmingham.ac.uk/research/activity/globalethics/index.aspx) Dept. of Philosophy. The postholder may be asked to share work in current projects, and must be prepared to adapt to new research opportunities. These will be identified in conjunction with Prof. Tom Sorell, to whom the postholder will report.  Applicants should have a philosophy doctorate, REF-worthy publications and a record of successful funding applications.

The Centre sees particular opportunities in future security work with an international or global dimension. For example, based on its work on surveillance and privacy, dual use, and human-in-the-loop issues, the Centre is piloting an advisory service on the ethics of security technology development for commercial and academic developers in Europe. Such a service could eventually become permanent. The Centre is also involved in Consortia applying for numerous projects under FP7 Security Calls, and is well-networked for this purpose. A secondary area of future work is the ethics and social acceptability internationally of different kinds of telehealth and telecare. Here the Centre will probably collaborate with researchers from University Hospital Birmingham, as well as health care providers and technologists from Europe and further afield.

The Centre is particularly interested in enlarging its security and health technology portfolios simultaneously --with expertise in computing and ICT, particularly issues connected with international cybersecurity and cyberwar, and the different computer-assisted technologies used internationally in disability care and elderly care. We would be looking for work in computing and ethics issues in both of these areas, but in security-relevant areas above all. This includes the ethics of participation in internet-based social networks, as well as hacking networks.
