Start date:  1 September 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Applications are invited for the post of Associate Professor (or Professor) of Philosophy to be held in the Faculty of Philosophy in association with a Sir Peter Strawson Tutorial Fellowship in Philosophy at University College.  This is a full-time position based at University College, High Street, Oxford, OX1 4BH and at the Faculty of Philosophy, Radcliffe Observatory Quarter, Woodstock Road, Oxford, OX2 6GG.

The appointee will be part of a lively and intellectually stimulating teaching and research community that performs to the highest international levels in research and publications, and will have access to the excellent research facilities that Oxford offers.  The Faculty of Philosophy is one of the largest departments of philosophy in the world, and is widely recognized to be amongst the best.  The appointee will be a member of both the College and the University community, and will have an active role to play in the running of the College (as a member of the Governing Body and a trustee of the College) and of the University (as a member of Congregation).  College benefits include a housing allowance, or access to a joint equity scheme, an academic allowance, an entertainment allowance, lunch and dinner in College, and private health insurance.

Applications for this post are welcome from well-qualified candidates with expertise in Philosophy.  The College requires someone with the capacity to teach Introductory Logic, Epistemology, and Metaphysics courses.  More specifically, the appointee will be expected to give tutorials or classes in General Philosophy and Introduction to Logic to 1st year undergraduates, and Knowledge and Reality and at least one other subject to 2nd, 3rd and 4th year undergraduates.  The Faculty is keen to develop its research profile in Logic/Philosophical Logic and the successful candidate must have an area of specialisation in this field.  The successful candidate will be expected to engage in advanced study and academic research, and to enthuse and inspire students at both undergraduate and graduate level through tutorials, classes, lectures, and supervision.

The successful candidate will hold or be near to completion of a PhD in a relevant field, and will have evidence of distinguished research and/or research potential in the area of Philosophy, a publication record of international standing, appropriate to the stage of the candidate’s career, and evidence of excellence in teaching Philosophy, including the ability to contribute to specialist teaching on a range of topics in Philosophy.  Further information about the main duties of the post, selection criteria, and details about how to apply are available on the College’s website at https://www.univ.ox.ac.uk/content/associate-professorship-and-tutorial-fellowship-philosophy

The closing date for applications is 12 noon (UK time) on Monday 4 December 2017.  Interviews are expected to take place during the week commencing 29 January 2018 (subject to confirmation).

Applications are particularly welcome from women and black and minority ethnic candidates, who are under-represented in academic posts in Oxford.
