Job description

The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) at American University invites applications for Program Director of the CAS Leadership and Ethical Development (LEAD) program.  The CAS LEAD Program, launched in 2014, is a four-year, 21-credit undergraduate interdisciplinary program that provides a thorough study of leadership and ethical development.  In addition to a rigorous course sequence focused on ethical reasoning and practice, LEAD students are required to do a substantive internship in their major field, present at the program’s Interdisciplinary Symposium on Leadership and Ethical Development, and meet often with the program director and other students to evaluate their outside experiences practicing leadership and evaluating ethical issues.  The program includes two retreats per year designed to help students reflect more deeply on leadership and practice dialogue, as well as at least one community activity a month, often a film viewing or attendance at a lecture or play relevant to the subjects of leadership and ethical development.  Learn more about the CAS LEAD program at http://www.american.edu/cas/lead/index.cfm.

This appointment is a 9-month term position and will commence on September 1, 2018 with potential for subsequent annual reappointments. The position may commence as early as June 1, 2018 in a paid part-time capacity. Rank is dependent on experience and stature in the field.  Although the Director will hold an appointment in the Department most appropriate for their discipline, he or she will report directly to the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Studies in the College of Arts and Sciences.  Note that the position requires administrative and recruitment responsibilities over the summer for which additional compensation will be offered starting in Summer 2018.

Applicants should hold a PhD or other terminal degree.  The position will require the incumbent to teach 12 credit hours per year, including, but not limited to, CAS LEAD seminars and capstone courses, and organize all LEAD Symposiums, retreats, and community activities.  Successful applicants must demonstrate experience in marketing and recruitment, course and program design, and undergraduate student advising and mentoring.  The position requires knowledge of the different arts and sciences disciplines, with expertise in at least one of the school’s fields, as well as a background in the academic study of ethics, experience in leadership roles, and demonstrated ability to administer programs.  All faculty are required to hold office hours and participate in School and University activities.

Salary is competitive.  Review of applications will begin March 1, 2018 and will continue until the position is filled. Please submit applications via: http://apply.interfolio.com/48688 .  Include a letter of application, curriculum vitae, three letters of recommendation, recent teaching evaluations (when possible), and copies of recent published papers or working papers.  Please contact Kara Reynolds, Associate Dean of Graduate Studies, 202-885-3768 or [email protected] if you have any questions.
