What matters to us is your contribution to intellectual progress in research, plus contributions to the team overall (publications, funding, visibility, cooperation, ...). Academic excellence is assumed, as are teamwork, an international outlook, and fluent English. The position involves co-supervision of PhD candidates at the Centre and possibly contributions to classroom teaching (jointly not more than 20% FTE). 10% FTE would concern the support of PAIR activities, in particular the diamond open access journals “Philosophy and the Mind Sciences”. Research fellows are expected to be mostly working on-site at PAIR.

This position is funded 50% by the EU ERANET NEURON project COMPAIN, which investigates pain ontologies from the perspective of neurophilosophy and medical ethics. PAIR's part of this project is headed by Sascha Benjamin Fink; the consortium includes a German team, headed by Claudia Bozzaro, and a Taiwanese team, headed by Ying-Tung Lin. For more, see here: https://www.neuron-eranet.eu/wp-content/uploads/Lay_COMPAIN.pdf

Vacancies 1
Location Oxford, England, United Kingdom
Job description

**Competitive Salary**

The University of Oxford is seeking to appoint a Director of Research to lead and develop the new Stephen A. Schwarzman Accelerator Fellowship Programme in Ethics, AI and Governance.  This is an opportunity for a charismatic and entrepreneurial leader to provide intellectual and strategic vision in ensuring the long-term success of this programme.

The five-year Accelerator Fellowship Programme will build on the core disciplinary strengths of the Institute for Ethics in AI and the University of Oxford, especially in moral philosophy, political philosophy, and legal philosophy. The programme will work in close collaboration with the Department of Computer Science at Oxford and with colleagues at other institutions across the world to address foundational challenges in regulation, both legal and political, across numerous jurisdictions. It will achieve global reach as well as local capacity building in both Oxford and elsewhere.

The Director of Research will bring leadership and stewardship to the Accelerator Fellowship Programme: They will oversee the recruitment of a talented cohort of Fellows, manage their integration into the Oxford ecosystem and participation in the Institute’s activities, and serve as a mentor. The appointee will work closely with the Institute’s Distinguished Senior Scientist, Professor Sir Nigel Shadbolt, and the Director of the Institute for Ethics in AI, Professor John Tasioulas, to enhance the Institute’s international reputation and forge highly effective relationships across the collegiate University, with external bodies and with the wider public.

This unique role will require a mix of strategic and leadership skills balanced by an outstanding record of achievement at an international level on the regulation of AI. Economic Architecture is a mission-driven nonprofit focused on driving change at the structural level. We address the most stubborn challenges impacting society, particularly those that affect the most vulnerable communities. Economic Architecture is dedicated to the premise that we can and should (re)design our markets to serve the public good. When we do, we have the potential to tap into the drive, ambition, and ingenuity of market participants to solve problems of historic proportion.

Since launching only a year ago, we have focused on closing the racial wealth gap by making home ownership more accessible and sustainable. This is just the first of many structural economic challenges we plan to address in the coming years.

Our work includes:

  • Designing structural innovations: Design, build and launch structural innovations with the potential to use the market to address large social problems.

  • Understanding structural innovations: Drive a growing awareness and understanding of when and how to (re)design the market to improve people’s lives.

What you can expect from our summer research program

  • Researching existing centers to help build strategy for new development

  • Stakeholder meetings with various partner organizations

  • Hybrid schedule with in-person opportunities in Washington DC

What you will observe, learn about and assist our teams to accomplish

  • Learn about Economic Architecture as a new emerging field and how our work with innovators is redesigning the market to serve the public good

  • Actively contribute to team brainstorms and discussions and to move rapidly between collaborative work and independent research

  • Implement targeted outreach strategies to connect with organizations and community stakeholders.

  • Collecting data on existing research institutes and centers that have similar aims, focusing on their mission, structure, and internal operations.

  • Assisting the project leaders in identifying the strengths and weaknesses of these centers.

  • Conducting a review on the literature concerning the creation of research centers and think tanks and the evaluation of their performances.

  • Synthesizing and communicating results of the analysis concisely.

  • Assisting the project leaders with the elaboration of the general framework underlying the mission of the research center.

  • Assisting the project leaders with the specification of the criteria to be met for the center to achieve its goals.

  • Assisting the project leaders in the center’s designing phase.

What background and experience should an Associate have?

About us

The Yeoh Tiong Lay Early Career Fellow will be based at the Yeoh Tiong Lay Centre for Politics, Philosophy & Law (YTL), within The Dickson Poon School of Law, one of the oldest law schools in England and recognised globally.  Established in 2013, the Centre holds a reputation as one of the world’s leading centres for the study of legal and political philosophy. Our aim is to illuminate the most pressing questions of our time through the application of rigorous interdisciplinary thought, and to engage policymakers and the wider public in an ongoing conversation on how to create a better society. Our research ranges from more abstract questions, such as those concerning the foundations of freedom and equality, to more applied ones, concerning, for example, the impact of AI or the abuse of human rights.

About the role

The Yeoh Tiong Lay Centre for Politics, Philosophy and Law (YTL) invites applications for the YTL Early Career Fellowship, a 12-month appointment due to commence in September 2024. The Fellowship provides a valuable development opportunity to an early career researcher with exceptional potential in legal or political philosophical research and scholarship.

Candidates should have a PhD awarded in the relevant subject area.* Candidates will have research expertise in the area of legal and/or political philosophy. Candidates must be able to demonstrate excellent communication and presentation skills, and a capacity to foster/contribute to an engaging and supportive research environment.

YTL Early Career Fellow responsibilities will include identifying appropriate grant funding opportunities and collaborating with the Centre Director and/or senior academics in grant application bids. The Early Career Fellow will be encouraged to produce authored and/or co-authored articles and to identify appropriate sources for publication.

Other requirements of the role will include attendance and participation at academic events, including internal workshops and seminars, external conferences and relevant training.

This is a full time post (35 hours per week), and you will be offered a fixed term contract until 31/08/2025.

All applications should include: 1) a cover letter; 2) a CV; and 3) a single-authored article-length writing sample.

FAQ

*Applicants should aim to have a PhD by the start date (September 1, 2024). If they will instead have it shortly after that, they should detail their timeline in the cover letter. This position will be advertised yearly.

Note: This post is open to early career researchers (PhD within the past 5 years) who meet the job criteria, including those already in permanent jobs or applying as postdoctoral researchers.

Job description

Toward a new philosophical perspective on computational sciences: exploratory approaches to astrophysics and astrochemistry

In the domains, where scientists work at the extreme limit of what can be achieved from a theoretical and experimental point of view, it is of the utmost importance to be able to validate their results, i.e., to compare them to observations, such as to assess and quantify their accuracy. Very often, however, these domains are also those where observations tend to be either sparse or uncertain. This is the case, e.g., when astrophysicists appeal to high-resolution numerical simulations to understand the evolution of galaxies, or when astrochemists want to know whether the interpretation of the spectroscopic observations allowing to detect and characterize interstellar molecules is done on the basis of reliable theoretical data. These epistemically opaque contexts require to identify and assess the impact of the main sources of uncertainty possibly distorting the model’s outputs, to make sure that an agreement or disagreement with observations can be properly interpreted and exploited to further guide the model’s development. The problem is all the more complex that developing models in high uncertainty contexts is often done iteratively, on the basis of successive approximations that permit to enrich the model and to determine its most fundamental ingredients. In this situation, a disagreement between predictions and observations is not necessarily a symptom of the model’s failure, but rather a guide to improve its empirical adequacy. These scientific domains reveal a real lack of epistemological tools that would allow to describe and analyze this science that we would like to refer as exploratory, whose aim is not to compare highly accurate predictions to well-understood observations, but rather to maximally exploit sparse empirical data to constrain the model’s development. The goal of this doctoral project is to start building a new philosophical framework able to characterize the progress and success made by exploratory approaches, notably through the following research topics:

  • assess the reliability of theoretical and experimental data that are neither reproducible in the traditional sense, nor directly comparable to observations;
  • Formulate evaluation suitability criteria for models developed iteratively;
  • Analyze the possible contribution of Machine-Learning based techniques to these exploratory approaches.

The thesis must  contribute to the development of new methods of confirmation, exploring the logical space existing between traditional methods of confirmation, verification or validation, implying abundant or non-problematicobservations, and non-empirical confirmation methods that seek to fully dispense with them. Such new methods are meant to capture and best support the practice of scientists working in these fields. This thesis is part of an interdisciplinary project, reuniting philosophy of science and astrochemistry. The selected candidate will therefore benefit from co-supervision in these two areas and be trained in astrochemical methods.

Pré-requis

  • Training in philosophy of science AND in physics or chemistry is highly recommanded.
  • Programming skills (Python, Fortran) could be recommanded depending in the research project that the candidate will defend.

Job description
Your work assignments

As a PhD student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20% of full-time.

The primary responsibility of doctoral students is to complete their PhD-thesis during their employment at Linköping University under supervision by senior faculty members.

PhD students will be required to take a number of taught courses (for a total 60 credits). These courses serve to deepen the students’ specialized expertise and strengthen their philosophical competence overall. It is expected that approximately two-thirds of these courses will be taken outside the students’ area of specialization. The language of instruction of these courses will be typically English.

Doctoral students are also expected to contribute to the Philosophy Division’s research environment. They will actively participate in the division’s research seminars and relevant research activities. Additional duties may include teaching, course design, and other teaching-related tasks. The holder of the position is expected to be present at the division on a day-to-day basis

Your qualifications

You have graduated at MA level or completed courses with a minimum of 240 credits, at least 60 of which must be in advanced courses (see below for more details). Alternatively, you have gained essentially corresponding knowledge in another way.

Applicants from Sweden must have completed course requirements worth at least 240 credits (hp), of which at least 60 credits must be at second-cycle (masters/magister) level. International applicants must demonstrate having completed studies of equivalent quality and quantity. As an additional discipline-specific requirement, applicants must have completed courses amounting to 30 credits on second-cycle level in philosophy, practical philosophy, applied ethics, or theoretical philosophy, including a degree project of at least 15 credits. International students must demonstrate having completed studies in philosophy of equivalent quality and quantity.

For this position, priority will be given to applicants whose planned doctoral projects align with the Division’s focal areas in theoretical philosophy, which currently are philosophy of science, philosophy of physics, epistemology, metaphysics, and phenomenology. Research plans that connect with the specialization of one or more of the Division’s faculty members will be given preference.

The selection of candidates will be based on the above requirements and specifications using the material submitted by the applicants. Of crucial significance is a well-developed research plan that details the applicant’s research objectives and outlines how the applicant intends to carry out their research (e.g., methodology, time plan, structure of the planned thesis, connection to previous research or study).  In order to ensure that PhD students receive adequate supervision, topical connection of the research plan to areas of specialization of faculty at the division will be considered to be an advantage. The evaluation of the top candidates may also include references and interviews as well as additional documentation requested. (For details of the application material to be submitted, please see below.)

The ability to conduct independent and original research competence is to be demonstrated primarily through the applicant’s published research (if any) or through writings submitted in fulfillment of courses taken by the applicant. These can be submitted as writing sample (see below). Evidence of the ability to plan, conduct, and coordinate research projects, and the ability to secure research grants can further strengthen the application (but are not indispensable at this stage).

Applicants must be sufficiently proficient in English to be able to conduct research and the other activities listed above. Proficiency in Swedish is an advantage.

Your workplace

The Division of Philosophy and Applied Ethics (https://liu.se/artikel/filosofi) offers courses and awards degrees in philosophy at undergraduate, masters, and doctoral levels. There are eight permanently employed faculty members. Teaching at the department of philosophy encompasses all main branches of philosophy: logic, epistemology, philosophy of science, history of philosophy, moral philosophy, aesthetics, philosophy of religion, and more. We also offer courses at other departments of the university, for example, at the Medical Faculty and the Faculty of Engineering. We have been successful in attracting external research funding and several faculty members lead or are involved in research projects of various kinds and dimensions. Some of our research work is characterized by an interdisciplinary focus and we also have a strong interest in philosophical questions pertaining to the role of science in society broadly understood. We organize a lively advanced research seminar that meets twice a month on average showcasing cutting-edge philosophical work by guest speakers from Sweden and abroad as well as our faculty members. In our numerous interdisciplinary cooperations, we utilize a variety of methodological approaches and work actively with several other departments at Linköping University.

The employment

When taking up the post, you will be admitted to the program for doctoral studies. More information about the doctoral studies at each faculty is available at Doctoral studies at Linköping University

The employment has a duration of four years’ full-time equivalent. You will initially be employed for a period of one year. The employment will subsequently be renewed for periods of maximum duration two years, depending on your progress through the study plan. The employment may be extended up to a maximum of five years, based on the amount of teaching and departmental duties you have carried out. Further extensions can be granted in special circumstances.
