2 Fully-Funded Junior Research Fellowships (Doctoral positions) (Fixed term)
Job category Graduate fellowship / Fixed term
AOS Open
AOC Open
Workload Full time
Vacancies 2
Location Tartu, Tartumaa, Estonia
Start date September 2024
Job description

You will be employed as a junior research fellow with student status at the University of Tartu Department of Philosophy.

This makes you eligible for mobility grants as a student, but as a junior research fellow, you will receive the salary of a junior research fellow. This salary is pegged to the minimum salary for junior research fellows at the University of Tartu, which is itself tied to the average Estonian salary -- and therefore automatically goes up with inflation. In 2023, the minimum salary for a junior researcher is 1720 euros per month. Your contract is performance-based. During the first 4 months of your postion, you will write a research plan for the 4 years of your position, along with milestones to be met each year. Your contract will be continued for each year, provided you reach the planned milestone by the planned time. The curriculum for the PhD at the University of Tartu includes professional development courses and courses that develop transferable skills i.e. that have application beyond a purely academic career. But the vast majority of the curriculum will be dedicated to your research.

Qualifications

  • Applicants must have a Master's degree. Although most of our PhD students have a Master's degree in Philosophy, several do not. Those who don't, typically pursue a PhD research project that is transdisciplinary (and are co-supervised accordingly).
  • Applicants must have good proficiency in spoken and written English (proof of this will be required from non-native speakers).

Applying

Applicants will be asked to submit the following:

  • Doctoral thesis project (3–5 pages + references): this should state the research question(s) to be addressed; contextualize the research question(s) in the relevant literature as it currently stands; describe the strategy for answering your research question(s); present a workplan for how this will be accomplished within the timeframe of the position.
  • CV
  • Writing sample (of roughly the length of a typical paper in philosophy).

Information on how to submit these documents is here: https://estonia.dreamapply.com/en_GB/courses/course/212-phd-humanities-specialisation-philosophy. The deadline for submissions is 15th May.

Application type Online
Instructions
Although the areas of specialization and competence are open, before applying, you should first identify a member of the Department of Philosophy who could serve as your supervisor. Your research interests should significantly overlap and the prospective supervisor should be willing to supervise your research project. Check the list of academic staff here: https://filsem.ut.ee/en/department-philosophy-faculty. Contact the relevant staff member as soon as possible to discuss the possibility of doctoral supervision.

Job description

– Project SENSOR
A range of new interventions targetting our sensory experiences will soon become commonplace in our society: Virtual and augmented reality, scientific sensory tools, sensory prosthetics, stroboscopic stimulation, psychedelic substances, and so on. In this project, we will study these interventions to develop a better philosophical understanding of the sensory experiences these new interventions provide, but also of ordinary sensory experiences. We aim to fully understand the wide range of perceptual and epistemic benefits that these technologies may offer and the related dangers that they may pose. Project SENSOR will achieve this goal by examining three foundational issues in the philosophy of perception of sensory engineering: the nature of (1) illusion and hallucination, (2) direct and indirect perception, and (3) perceptual knowledge and epistemic risks in cases of sensory engineering.

The SENSOR consortium has been funded by a joint DFG/AHRC-grant and brings together a team from the Centre for the Study of Perceptual Experience, University of Glasgow (Derek Brown, Jack Lyons, Fiona Macpherson) with researchers from the Centre for Philosophy and AI Research, FAU Erlangen (Sascha Benjamin Fink + this advertised position). Several joint meetings and coordinated events of these groups are planned.

– Research Environment
The Centre for Philosophy and AI Research (PAIR) was founded in 2022 with support from a prestigious Alexander von Humboldt Professorship for Vincent C. Müller at the Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU, est. 1743). In addition to the AvH Foundation, PAIR is funded by the University, and 3rd party research funding. Our vision is to help set the agenda in the philosophy and ethics of AI, through publications, events, structures, and visible activities. This research will generate intellectual progress that can have a deep impact towards a better society. Our work involves excellent people with a background in philosophy, cognitive sciences, neurosciences, social sciences and computer sciences. We offer an international, stimulating, supportive and pleasant research environment – situated in a lively and modern workplace in the centre of beautiful Erlangen. The working language at PAIR is English.

PAIR currently has 13 members: The director (Vincent C. Müller), a director of research (Sascha Benjamin Fink), 4 post-doc research fellows, 4 PhD students, 2 post-docs associated with funded projects (BMBF-PsychedELSI and DFG-PhiMiSci), 1 admin, visiting fellows, and affiliated FAU faculty.

For more information, visit https://www.pair.fau.eu

Beyond PAIR, the postdoc will cooperate with the SENSOR group in Glasgow during regular meetings.

– Tasks
The major focus of this position (75%) will be research on the topics of project SENSOR (see link below). What matters to us is your contribution to intellectual progress in SENSOR-related research, plus contributions to the team overall. Academic excellence is assumed, as are teamwork, an international outlook, and fluent English.

A minor part (25%) will be helping Sascha Benjamin Fink with managerial tasks, e.g. organising project SENSOR, coordinating with the Glasgow team and DFG, organising workshops and conferences, and supporting Fink's work at PAIR. As most administration works in German, proficiency in German is considered a plus, but is not mandatory.

There are no teaching duties associated with this position. The post-doc is expected to be mostly working on-site at PAIR in Erlangen.

– Benefits
Salary at level TV-L E13, full-time (currently ca. €50-73000/year, before tax, depending on experience). The employment includes social security benefits, health insurance (1/2 employer, 1/2 employee), pension, sick pay, etc. There is funding for travel to conferences and for the organisation of events.

Starting date: 01.08.2024 (negotiable)

The appointment is initially for 33 months. Employment beyond that will depend on the funding situation by then. Part-time employment is a possibility if needed to allow family-care.

Everyone deserves to feel at home at our university. In its pursuit of academic excellence, FAU is committed to equality of opportunity and to a proactive and inclusive approach, which supports and encourages all under-represented groups, promotes an inclusive culture and values diversity. FAU is a family-friendly employer.

– Requirements
PhD in a relevant field, ideally by the time of appointment. A track record of work in the philosophy of perception, philosophy of psychedelics, epistemic risks or philosophy of AI is desirable.

We do not require that applicants already have a visa & work permit for the EU/Germany.

– Procedure
Applications via e-mail to [email protected], with subject line "SENSOR", with a single PDF that includes:
• A motivation letter (max. 2 pages)

• CV (with publications, if applicable)

• Writing sample of what the candidate considers their best work

Job description
Your work assignments

As a PhD student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20% of full-time.

The primary responsibility of doctoral students is to complete their PhD-thesis during their employment at Linköping University under supervision by senior faculty members.

PhD students will be required to take a number of taught courses (for a total 60 credits). These courses serve to deepen the students’ specialized expertise and strengthen their philosophical competence overall. It is expected that approximately two-thirds of these courses will be taken outside the students’ area of specialization. The language of instruction of these courses will be typically English.

Doctoral students are also expected to contribute to the Philosophy Division’s research environment. They will actively participate in the division’s research seminars and relevant research activities. Additional duties may include teaching, course design, and other teaching-related tasks. The holder of the position is expected to be present at the division on a day-to-day basis

Your qualifications

You have graduated at MA level or completed courses with a minimum of 240 credits, at least 60 of which must be in advanced courses (see below for more details). Alternatively, you have gained essentially corresponding knowledge in another way.

Applicants from Sweden must have completed course requirements worth at least 240 credits (hp), of which at least 60 credits must be at second-cycle (masters/magister) level. International applicants must demonstrate having completed studies of equivalent quality and quantity. As an additional discipline-specific requirement, applicants must have completed courses amounting to 30 credits on second-cycle level in philosophy, practical philosophy, applied ethics, or theoretical philosophy, including a degree project of at least 15 credits. International students must demonstrate having completed studies in philosophy of equivalent quality and quantity.

For this position, priority will be given to applicants whose planned doctoral projects align with the Division’s focal areas in theoretical philosophy, which currently are philosophy of science, philosophy of physics, epistemology, metaphysics, and phenomenology. Research plans that connect with the specialization of one or more of the Division’s faculty members will be given preference.

The selection of candidates will be based on the above requirements and specifications using the material submitted by the applicants. Of crucial significance is a well-developed research plan that details the applicant’s research objectives and outlines how the applicant intends to carry out their research (e.g., methodology, time plan, structure of the planned thesis, connection to previous research or study).  In order to ensure that PhD students receive adequate supervision, topical connection of the research plan to areas of specialization of faculty at the division will be considered to be an advantage. The evaluation of the top candidates may also include references and interviews as well as additional documentation requested. (For details of the application material to be submitted, please see below.)

The ability to conduct independent and original research competence is to be demonstrated primarily through the applicant’s published research (if any) or through writings submitted in fulfillment of courses taken by the applicant. These can be submitted as writing sample (see below). Evidence of the ability to plan, conduct, and coordinate research projects, and the ability to secure research grants can further strengthen the application (but are not indispensable at this stage).

Applicants must be sufficiently proficient in English to be able to conduct research and the other activities listed above. Proficiency in Swedish is an advantage.

Your workplace

The Division of Philosophy and Applied Ethics (https://liu.se/artikel/filosofi) offers courses and awards degrees in philosophy at undergraduate, masters, and doctoral levels. There are eight permanently employed faculty members. Teaching at the department of philosophy encompasses all main branches of philosophy: logic, epistemology, philosophy of science, history of philosophy, moral philosophy, aesthetics, philosophy of religion, and more. We also offer courses at other departments of the university, for example, at the Medical Faculty and the Faculty of Engineering. We have been successful in attracting external research funding and several faculty members lead or are involved in research projects of various kinds and dimensions. Some of our research work is characterized by an interdisciplinary focus and we also have a strong interest in philosophical questions pertaining to the role of science in society broadly understood. We organize a lively advanced research seminar that meets twice a month on average showcasing cutting-edge philosophical work by guest speakers from Sweden and abroad as well as our faculty members. In our numerous interdisciplinary cooperations, we utilize a variety of methodological approaches and work actively with several other departments at Linköping University.

The employment

When taking up the post, you will be admitted to the program for doctoral studies. More information about the doctoral studies at each faculty is available at Doctoral studies at Linköping University

The employment has a duration of four years’ full-time equivalent. You will initially be employed for a period of one year. The employment will subsequently be renewed for periods of maximum duration two years, depending on your progress through the study plan. The employment may be extended up to a maximum of five years, based on the amount of teaching and departmental duties you have carried out. Further extensions can be granted in special circumstances.

The Faculty of Philosophy and Corpus Christi College intend to appoint to the Sekyra and White’s Professorship of Moral Philosophy with effect from 1 October 2024, or as soon as possible thereafter.

This post is a statutory professorship, which is the most senior academic grade at Oxford. The Sekyra and White’s Professor will play a leading role in research and teaching in moral philosophy at Oxford and will be a Professorial Fellow of Corpus Christi College.

Oxford is one of the world’s great centres for philosophy, and the Faculty contains one of the world’s largest philosophical communities. The Faculty has a vigorous research culture. Location Paris, Île-de-France, France
Start date Fall 2024
Job description

I recruit two PhD candidates (starting October 2024, 36 months), fully funded by the MEDiverSEAty EU Horizon Europe grant on two topics related to the representation of the sea and sea life in the Mediterranean context:

(1) A broadly operationalizable notion of (marine) biodiversity

(2) Representation of Biodiversity in coastal and non-coastal populations

(Please follow the links to obtain more information about each profile and for applying.)

I welcome applications from candidates with a background in philosophy of science and/or marine biology (profile 1) and in social studies/sociology (profile 2), with an interest to cross disciplinary boundaries and a strong interest in marine conservation issues. Candidates can be of any nationality. We strongly encourage applications from under-represented groups.

The selected candidates will be part of the Marie Curie Training network MEDiverSEAty. In quest of the human dimensions of MEDiterranean Marine Biodiversity, together with other 8 PhD candidates recruited at various Mediterranean universities (IT, ES, FR, EL, ME, MT).

An attractive stipend is offered, along with a family and mobility allowance package.

The work will be based in Paris, with planned secondments at some of the partner Universities and at partner NGOs. The candidates will be enrolled in the Doctoral School Law, Political Studies and Philosophy of EHESS.

In Paris, I run the Navigations team of the Institut Jean Nicod, and I am a member of the Environment: Concepts and Norms team directed by Sacha Bourgeois-Gironde. The two teams together comprise about 15 among PhD students, MA students, and post-docs of many different nationalities working on issues related to the reconceptualization of the environment.

It’s a vibrant research group: currently students andresearchers work on topics such as the role of science in the CCAMLAR, on marine citizen science in the framework of the Plankton Planet initiative, on alternatives to MPAs, on the valuation of ecosystem services, on the Nagoya protocol, on ontologies for watery entities, on remediation to climate anxiety, among other subjects.

We are members of the OMER Research Cluster of CNRS, and we benefit from various research contracts, among which BiOcean5D. We organize yearly retreats in places of naturalistic interest (the last one was in Procida, Italy, on a sailboat.) My own teaching includes the class Climate Change and Changing Behavior at PSL/EHESS, and the seminar on Representations of the Ocean at EHESS/PSL. Two of my recent publications are the anthology The Sailing Mind and the monograph Philosophie de l’Océan.

Research Fellow (Fixed term)
Job category Postdoc or similar / Fixed term
AOS The Logic and Rationality of Imagination; What if…? Knowing by imagining (WIKI)
AOC Open
Workload Full time
Vacancies 1
Location St Andrews, United Kingdom
Start date 1st January 2025.
Job description

£37,099 - £40,251 per annum

Applications are sought for a Research Fellow (postdoc) to work with Principal Investigator (PI) Prof. Franz Berto, conducting research at the Arché Research Centre at the Department of Philosophy.

The postdoc will work in a 4-year project funded by the Leverhulme Trust, starting on 1st January 2025, and entitled ‘What if…? Knowing by imagining (WIKI). The Logic and Rationality of Imagination’. This will be a four-year, full time research job.

Here follows a short description of the WIKI project:

‘What if?'-counterfactual questions are of momentous importance for scientific explanations (‘Would we see that particle track if the atom was ionized?’), to ascertain responsibilities (‘Would he have hit the brakes, had he not been distracted?’), to choose what to do (‘Would I get to the other side if I jumped the stream?’). We address them by imagining that a hypothetical situation obtains and wondering what would follow. But how can imagination give us knowledge of reality, if it's free departure from reality?

WIKI will apply in the philosophy of imagination tools from formal epistemology, in particular epistemic and probabilistic logic, to address this issue. If we start by taking counterfactual imagination as a kind of simulated belief revision, we can then analyze it using formal theories of belief revision, in qualitative (focusing on full, all-or-nothing belief) and quantitative clothing (focusing on credences/degrees of belief). In three interrelated subprojects, WIKI will (1) develop a logic and formal epistemology of imagination as suppositional thinking, (2) apply them to analyse the workings of scientific thought experiments, and (3) compare them to empirical results from the psychology of reasoning, to provide an account of how we can become better hypothetical reasoners.

The post is available for 48 months starting on 1st January 2025.

Employees of the University have access to a wide range of staff benefits including:

  • Annual leave of 34 days, plus 5 public holidays
  • Membership of the USS Pension Scheme with generous employer contributions
  • A hybrid working environment, including partial homeworking where appropriate and a range of family friendly policies
  • Staff discount scheme for local and national goods and services
  • Free staff parking, employee Carshare and Cycle to Work Schemes and subsidised local bus travel
  • Subsidised sports membership, reduced tuition fees on degree programmes for staff/children of staff, access to library facilities, salary sacrifice scheme and a range of wellbeing initiatives

For further details on the project and inquiries, contact the PI Franz Berto ( [email protected] ).

Applications are particularly welcome from women, people from the Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) community, and other protected characteristics who are under-represented in research posts at the University.
