Job Description Summary

The Program for Leadership and Character at Wake Forest University seeks a visionary, collaborative, and committed scholar to be the Senior Research Scholar for the Educating Character Initiative (ECI), a nationwide initiative to equip U.S. colleges and universities to educate character and assess the impact of those efforts. The Senior Research Scholar will work closely with the Director of the Educating Character Initiative to develop and execute the evaluation, assessment, and research strategy for the ECI; manage research integration and evaluation across the various functions of ECI; design and coordinate cross-institutional research among ECI community members; and evaluate the short-term and longitudinal impact of the ECI on educating character in undergraduate institutions. The Senior Research Scholar will also design, execute, and publish empirical studies and reports; provide workshops and presentations to support scholars and practitioners; and offer individual assessment consultations to members of the ECI community. The Senior Research Scholar will supervise one Research Coordinator, two Research Fellows, and any research consultants, postdoctoral fellows, or student research assistants who join the effort. In the process, the Senior Research Scholar will work collaboratively with the ECI Director and Senior Scholar of Character in grantee and community stewardship and nurture a positive and productive team culture in ECI and the broader Program for Leadership and Character by working collaboratively, efficiently, and effectively towards common goals, missions, and visions. Given the scope of the role and the scale of the ECI’s efforts, the position offers a unique and exciting opportunity for a scholar to advance a robust scholarly agenda related to leadership and character development and assessment, contribute new ideas and evidence to the growing field of character education, and extend the impact of a major new initiative to promote character education within U.S. colleges and universities.

We welcome applications from scholars with expertise in the empirical assessment of character, moral education, moral personality, or related topics who have strong methodological experience assessing interventions or evaluating programs. Evidence of mixed-methods (i.e., quantitative and qualitative) empirical research skills is required. Evidence of experience managing research teams, consulting with others to develop research and assessment plans, and coordinating research grants is preferred. Candidates who wish to work remotely will be considered.

Job Description

Essential Functions: 

  • Lead the development and refinement of a strategic research framework and implementation plans for the ECI in collaboration with the ECI Director and Senior Scholar of Character.
  • Lead all research, measurement, and evaluation at the ECI, including evaluation of the ECI’s effectiveness in stewardship, grant making, community development, and programming as well as cross-institutional research to assess the impact of character education within and across undergraduate institutions.
  • Supervise, mentor, and support the work of two ECI Research Fellows and the ECI Research Coordinator, as well as any research consultants, postdoctoral fellows, or student research assistants who join the effort.
  • Develop a clear project management timeline with measurable outputs and clear outcomes.
  • Organize and facilitate workshops and webinars on research and assessment strategies, scales, and practices to support ECI community members, in collaboration with the ECI Director and Senior Scholar of Character.
  • Assist with the evaluation of grant applications and provide guidance, feedback, and direction to applicants on their research and assessment plans.
  • Provide individualized consultations and guidance to help them develop their research and assessment plans.
  • Prepare research reports and manuscripts for publication and lead the dissemination of research findings in the form of journal articles, popular press publications, and seminar and conference presentations.
  • Work collaboratively with the research team of the Program for Leadership and Character and ECI community members to source, share, and develop a resource-base and evidence-base for programming and assessment strategies, scales, and tools.
  • Assist with the organizations of conferences and convenings to support research and assessment efforts, advance the field of character education, and bring together scholars and practitioners to share their needs and approaches in educating character in undergraduate institutions.
  • Apply for and manage research grants to carry out additional research studies for the ECI and ECI community and/or to extend the duration and impact of ongoing studies as appropriate.

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • PhD. in a social science discipline (including but not limited to psychology, education, human development, or sociology), and 3 years of experience with research, assessment, and/or program evaluation, or the equivalent level of education and experience.
  • Expertise in empirical research and assessment, preferably related to character, character education, moral education, moral personality, or related topics.
  • Strong and demonstrated quantitative and qualitative research skills and a track record of academic publication.
  • Expertise in mixed-method research design, assessment planning, and data analysis.
  • Exceptional written, oral, and visual communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational, administrative, and interpersonal skills, with accuracy and attention to detail. 
  • Familiarity with institutional review board (IRB) policies and procedures.
  • Ability to use qualitative analysis software (e.g., NVivo) and statistical software (e.g., SAS, SPSS, STATA, or R) to analyze and report data.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering diverse, equitable, and inclusive working and learning environments.
  • At least 1 year of experience managing team members.
  • Experience planning and managing complex projects and budgets.
  • Experience leading research projects and engaging diverse stakeholders.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with people across multiple institutions, disciplines, and skill sets.

Job Description

The Pacific Division of the American Philosophical Association seeks to fill a position of Assistant to the Secretary-Treasurer of the Pacific Division of the APA beginning with training (with compensation), and in-position for the three-year term beginning August 1, 2024. We expect the assistant to serve a three-year term, renewable. Membership in the APA is required. Attendance at the yearly meetings of the Pacific Division of the APA required. The Pacific Division covers travel, lodging, and per diem meals for the annual meeting.

Candidate should be organized, responsive, flexible, and independent, comfortable with using software and online platforms, and comfortable with responding effectively to service requests via email.

Duties

  • Assisting the Secretary-Treasurer of the Pacific Division of the APA by managing, editing, and updating the online database of users in the meeting program system, managing and entering data into the online meeting program system, and managing the email systems for the Pacific Division.
  • Assisting the Program Committee and the Secretary-Treasurer with assembling the program.
  • Responding to emails as the support person for the Pacific Division.
  • Entering session information into the online meeting program system, copy-editing the meeting program, attending the yearly meetings of the Pacific Division of the APA, taking and preparing minutes for the yearly executive committee and general business meetings of the Pacific Division of the APA.

Location

The Pacific Division of the APA is located on the west coast of the United States and Canada, and the Assistant to the Secretary-Treasurer of the Pacific Division of the APA is expected to attend every Pacific Division meeting (usually in March or April, often during Passover and in the week preceding the Easter holiday). There are no requirements for location other than the ability and willingness of the candidate to attend the yearly meetings of the Pacific Division of the APA.

Start Date

In training (with compensation) beginning July 1, 2024, and in-position for the three-year term beginning August 1, 2024.

Compensation

Commensurate with experience. If the person hired for the position is a graduate student, the APA will endeavor to match the hourly wage normally paid to graduate student assistants at the institution where the student is enrolled. For others, the APA will offer an hourly rate appropriate to the position and consistent with prevailing wages in the area where the individual resides.

  • PhD or equivalent advanced degree in History of Science, History and Philosophy of Science, or closely related field by time of appointment.

The Department of Rhetoric is a leading center for interdisciplinary research and teaching in the humanities and social sciences, committed to the study of rhetorical traditions from the classical to the contemporary eras.

The department invites applications for a pool of qualified temporary instructors to teach undergraduate courses, should a need arise, in any of the following possible areas: Environmental Humanities; Gender and Sexuality; Rhetoric of Visual Culture, Media and/or Literature; Critical Theory; Rhetoric of Law; Rhetoric of Religion; Politics and Rhetoric of Political Theory; Reading and Composition.

General duties: in addition to teaching responsibilities, general duties include holding office hours, assigning grades, advising students, preparing course materials (e.g.., syllabus), and interacting with students outside of class time via email and campus web-based course resources.

Job description

The Department of Philosophy at Loyola Marymount University invites applications for one post-doctoral position to teach undergraduate courses in the university core curriculum. Area of specialization is open. The position consists of a one-year term with the possibility of renewal up to three years total. The post-doc should be within 1 year of earning the Ph.D. The objective of this post-doctoral program is to facilitate professional development as teacher-scholars in a Jesuit and Mission driven institution. Area of specialization is open. The successful applicant will be expected to teach in the Jesuit context of Catholic higher education. One course is of particular importance, “Philosophical Inquiry,” which is described in our Bulletin as “an introductory exploration of central questions and interpretations of human existence, with special emphasis on theory of knowledge and theory of reality, carried on in light of the Catholic intellectual tradition.” The post-doc may also be asked to teach a core course in ethics described as “a study of the questions which a person must ask, and the answers one must consider, in forming an intelligent philosophy of moral choice, carried on in the light of the Catholic intellectual tradition.”

We seek a dedicated teacher-scholar with demonstrated or the potential of teaching excellence in accordance with LMU’s Mission and justice-driven commitments grounded in our Jesuit and Marymount traditions. The position has a six-course teaching load for the academic year (3-3).

Beat.  The Editor will supervise the following series:

  • Teaching and Learning Video Series

In addition, the editor will lead the review process for posts submitted to the Teaching Beat for potential publication. 


Here are the responsibilities that the editor will fulfill: 

  • Solicit and develop posts for the blog

  • Monitoring the pitch spreadsheet for pitches relevant to the Editor’s beat

  • Manage relevant pitches - including liaising with authors, rejecting pitches that do not fit our mission, working with authors on ideas to develop posts

  • Manage comments on the posts that the Editor is responsible for, including approving comments, and emailing commenters whose comments do not adhere to our guidelines (e.g. if they don’t provide a first and last name, the Editor will email and request that they add it).  Also monitor comments on relevant series editors’ posts.  

  • Edit posts according to our blog guidelines - including standard formatting and adding links to author’s names (to their personal website or faculty page), books, and other places as relevant, adding an image to the post, tagging it with appropriate tags

  • Send posts to Copyeditor for checking

  • Scheduling the post, including adding the name of the post to the Blog calendar

  • Writing posts and engaging in discussions where relevant

  • Adding names of contacts to our Contact sheet so that we know who is talking with whom

  • Checking that the post has been shared on social media and alerting the Editor-in-Chief if there any issues (this should be automatic for Facebook & Twitter)  

  • Participate in monthly Blog Editorial calls

  • Ensure legal and ethical integrity of the Blog

  • Enhance the Blog's public standing

  • Develop series and assist with onboarding new series editors

  • Other activities as discussed with the Editor-in-Chief

First, we seek a Series Editor to manage the ongoing Graduate Student Reflection Series. The Graduate Student Reflection Series asks graduate students to reflect on their journeys as students within a graduate philosophy class.

Second, we seek a Series Editor to co-edit the ongoing Syllabus Spotlight.  The Syllabus Spotlight highlights specific syllabi and asks the professors who wrote them to comment on their interesting pedagogical aspects.

Third, we seek a Series Editor to edit the ongoing Undergraduate Philosophy Club series. The Undergraduate Philosophy Club series encourages undergrads to discuss their experiences organizing a philosophy club.

If neither of these series interest you, you’re welcome to pitch a new series about teaching philosophy. Please email the idea for the series, ideas for possible posts, and examples of who you could contact for the series’ content.

Basic Qualifications:

At the time of appointment, the candidate should have an earned Ph.D. (or equivalent) in Ethics with a concentration or competency towards engineering or technology, or related equivalence in the Sociology or History of technology, or a related field. Candidate should have demonstrated evidence of effective university-level teaching, showing evidence of excellence in teaching courses engendering student interest and excitement through engaging pedagogical techniques.

Preferred Qualifications:

An understanding of the Santa Clara teaching scholars model and the Jesuit model of formation. A demonstrated excellence in teaching at the university level. Knowledge and experience researching and/or teaching the interconnection between culture and technology and the ability to connect that interplay to the ethical responsibilities of an engineer. Additionally, the ideal candidate will also have knowledge in and around how religious values may inform technical design.

For the 2024-2025 academic year, the fellow will hold the rank of instructor and teach a 1+1 load. Following the successful completion of the fellowship year the position is convertible to a tenure track appointment (with a 3+3 teaching load). As such, the Department is enthusiastically recruiting a specialist with the expectation that the Fellow will be converted to a full time, tenure track appointment to the Philosophy faculty at NAU. 

The Future Faculty Fellow program is part of NAU’s Elevating Excellence Initiative, a key aim of which is to promote and support Indigenous community-driven teaching, mentorship, and scholarship. In seeking to fill this position, the Philosophy Department aims to expand its curricular offerings and scholarly output in Indigenous Philosophy.

Area of Specialization (AOS): Indigenous Philosophy broadly construed

Area of Competence (AOC): Open, but the department has a preference for areas of competence that complement Departmental strengths.

Responsibilities Include:

  • During the Fellowship year the successful candidate will teach a 1/1 load.
  • Develop curricula in Indigenous Philosophy.
  • Demonstrate substantial progress towards publishing in their specialization including delivering a research presentation to the NAU community.
  • Starting AY 25-26 the successful candidate will be responsible for teaching a large capacity course in Indigenous Philosophy that fulfills the Indigenous People’s requirement in NAU’s General Studies program as well as upper division courses in their areas of specialization or competence as determined by departmental needs.

***This position is an on-site position which requires the incumbent to complete their work primarily at an NAU site, campus, or facility with or without accommodation.  Opportunities for remote work are rare.***

Minimum Qualifications

  • ABD or PhD. in Philosophy or related field.
  • Demonstrated expertise in Indigenous Philosophy broadly construed, as evidenced by dissertation topic, publication record, or teaching experience.

 Preferred Qualifications

  • A publication record in the AOS or demonstration of future research potential
  • Demonstrated experience with and/or potential for future success in mentoring students through teaching and/or research, and scholarship
  • Demonstrated experience working with people from all backgrounds
  • Demonstrated excellence in scholarship, teaching, community engagement, and service that forwards NAU’s Elevating Excellence goal
